John von Neumann

John von Neumann 100 Year Anniversary

John von Neumann 100 Year Anniversary. Friday, June 2, 15:00-18:00, ETH AudiMax.

This year we celebrate John ven Neumann 100th anniversary of enrollment at ETH. Celebrating John von Neumann (1903-1957) who matriculated for a degree in chemical engineering at ETH Zurich 100 years ago in 1923, we invite you to an afternoon of exciting talks in some of those domains where John von Neumann’s pioneering work continues to be of great importance.

On Friday, June 2, 2023, starting at 15:00 in the ETH Audimax, there will be four talks followed by an apero.

• Serge Haroche (ENS Paris, 2012 Nobel Prize in Physics) will speak about quantum mechanics and quantum information.

 • Yurii Nesterov (UC Louvain, 2009 John von Neumann Prize) will speak about higher-order methods of finding equilibrium.

• Larry Samuelson (Yale University, former editor of Econometrica and the American Economic Review) will speak about economics, utility and game theory.

• Benny Sudakov (ETH Zurich, Inaugural Fellow of the American Mathematical Society) will speak about some of von Neumann’s mathematical contribution.

We are extremely pleased to have such an outstanding lineup of speakers, and welcome anyone interested, space permitting, to attend!     The event is organized and supported jointly by various professors from multiple departments at ETH Zurich and UZH, by the ETH President Joël Mesot, by the NCCR Automation, and by the Zurich Center for Market Design.
